Abstract

The study of the novel Wilhelm Meister's Journeyman Years, or the Renunciants [Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre oder Die Entsagenden] (1829), the object of this proposed research, aims to provide an original contribution to the history of the socialism, of the nascent sociology and, by extension, of the Marxism. We intend to investigate the social thought expressed in the novel and its relations with the ideas of the early socialists. The research aims to contribute to the specific research on Goethe - since the debate on the work in question remains a gap in the Brazilian academic studies - with a sui generis approach: to what extent we can say that Goethe was on German soil a precursor of the socialist ideas?
