Abstract

Trentepohliales is one of the most representative groups of the microflora of terrestrial environments. This research proposes to investigate Trentepohliales populations from southern Brazilian (eventually from other regions of Brazil) under morphological, molecular and phylogenetic approaches. The findings will be added to previous results of specimens from other regions of American continent (USA, French Guiana and Panama) to improve the taxonomic and phylogenetic evaluations on the group. Samples of Trentepohliales from Brazil will be submitted to detailed morphological study with analyses of the following characteristics: habit, plant mass characteristics, metric and morphological characteristics of the vegetative cells and reproductive structures. Molecular studies will be conducted using rbcL and ITS markers for characterization and phylogenetic analyses. This polyphasic approach (morphological, geographical and molecular data) must result in a better understanding of the taxonomic circumscription, biogeography and phylogenetic history of the studied species and offering insights about taxonomy and phylogeny of the whole group.
