Abstract

Hip arthroplasty is an extremely valuable therapeutic resource, widely used by orthopaedic surgeons. It is traditionally performed by so-called conventional approaches, but recently minimally invasive approaches were developed with the promise of reducing aggression to periarticular muscles, which has not yet been proven objectively. In this project we will study prospectively 120 patients undergoing elective total hip arthroplasty, which will be distributed in two cohorts (conventional direct lateral approach and minimally invasive anterior approach). Through the measurement of biochemical markers of muscle damage and inflammation (creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase and C-reactive protein) in certain periods of time over a month after the arthroplasty, we will quantify the possible reduction of muscle damage in minimally invasive compared to conventional approach; statistical comparison of each biochemical parameter will be performed with the Student's t test for independent samples. Furthermore, we will describe the dynamics of the blood levels of C-reactive protein over time in patients undergoing hip arthroplasty by a minimally invasive approach. All these aspects to be studied have great relevance and clinical application in orthopaedics. (AU)
