Abstract

The insects Diaphorina citri, Hypothenemus hampei and Helicoverpa armigera are considered plagues of great economic importance in the Brazilian agricultural scenario, once D. citri is the primary vector of the disease "Greening", which is responsible for great losses in the national citriculture. The H. hampei cause considerable damage to coffee grains, affecting their quality and consequently their international commercialization. No less important is the emergence of H. armigera, affecting mainly the soya and cotton fields throughout the country. Today, these plagues are mainly controlled through the use of synthetic chemical products, and the long term sustainability of such action has been discussed. The biological control would be a sustainable option to control these plagues, and the use of entomopathogenic fungi has been presenting promising results, mainly when associated with spreader sticker adjuvants, which can optimize the action of the fungi in this type of control. Once the cuticle of the insects in general is the main defense barrier against fungi, the elucidation of its morphological structure is fundamental to allow the infecting process successful and efficient, ensuring the extermination of such plagues. The present project proposes the development of this research using morphological tools such as histology and ultrastructure to study the cuticle of these plagues in different life stages after subjected to formulations of the fungus I. fumosorosea, associated with the adjuvants Tween 80 USP; KBRAdj and Silwet L-77 considering 24h, 48h and 72h exposition periods.
