Abstract

In the aging process, neuroendocrine system shows changes in relation to hormonal pulsatility. The decrease in estrogen (E2) plasma levels, the characteristic female senility, exerts a strong influence on the composition and functional performance of skeletal muscle tissue (SMT). Estrogen hormone therapy (EHT) and the use of selective estrogen receptor modulators [Raloxifene (RLX)] are widely prescribed in medical clinics aiming to minimize muscle and bone loss during the aging process. However, to date, there are few reports upon the effects of such interventions on SMT and in particular; there are few reports on the relationship of these therapies with muscle oxidative profile. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of EHT (17 - ² estradiol) and treatment with Raloxifene (RLX) on oxidative profile of skeletal muscle tissue of senile rats.
