Abstract

Isotopic measurements are widely used in various fields of science: medicine, archeology, food science, etc. Isotope dilution analysis (IDA) is a well-known analytical technique based on the measurement of isotope ratios in samples where its isotopic composition has been altered by the addition of a known amount of an isotopically enriched element. TIMS or ICP-MS had been traditionally applied to the elemental isotope dilution analysis, as the isotope shift in wavelength, are smaller than 1 cm-1 making difficult the detection of emission / absorption of isotopes. However, isotopic shifts can be orders of magnitude larger in molecular than atomic spectra, since the presence of the vibrational and rotational levels in diatomic molecules allows greater number of transitions, so that shifts reach up to 100 cm-1. With the advent of high-resolution continuum source atomic/molecular absorption spectrometry - HR CS A/MAS, the detection of non-metals by molecular bands was made possible due to the combination of detector and monochromators employees. Thus, it is possible to see the line width absorbed by atoms or bands structured diatomic molecules. The main objective of this project is to develop a sensitive and accurate analytical method which allows the determination of bromine by isotope dilution, using 79Br and 81Br, via AlBr ou CaBr molecule by high resolution molecular absorption spctrometry. The stage will be held at the University of Zaragoza, in collaboration with Prof. Martin Resano.
