Abstract

During the course of evolution, some turtles evolved mechanisms that allow them to deal with situations of oxygen deprivation and reperfusion, like the decreased production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and a high antioxidant capacity. Phrynops geoffroanus (Testudines: Chelidae) comprises a group of reptiles that easily survives at anoxic environments, representing an excellent model for studies related to the physiological and biochemical mechanisms involved in resistance to oxidative stress and cell damage, which may also be related to the longevity of these animals. Therefore, this study aims to understand the mechanisms of antioxidant defense that operate in the post-state of induced hypoxia in Phrynops geoffroanus, trying to evaluate the activity of the main antioxidant enzymes, as well as cellular damage in the brain, heart, liver and pancreas after reperfusion. The experiments will be conducted at normoxic and induced hypoxic situation. We believe that rates of enzymatic activity will be greater in tissues of the animals at hypoxic period. In relation to cell damage we expected that, due to P. geoffroanus adaptations, which allow their survivor at environments with low oxygen, cell damage will be low or even absent. The results obtained in this study may not only elucidate issues of conservation of a species often neglected, but also contribute to a better understanding of the life history, biochemistry and cell biology in these animals, as well as understand the different effects and repair mechanisms of oxidative stress.
