Study of the association between insomnia and musculoskeletal pain in postmenopausal women

Abstract

Currently, women live on average 30 years after menopause, and along with the aging process brings several changes in women's lives, such as the occurrence of menopausal symptoms, sleep disturbances and complaints of pain. Among these changes, insomnia and musculoskeletal pain seems to be the most prevalent, and yet occur frequently, causing negative impact on quality of life in women after menopause. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the interaction between insomnia and chronic musculoskeletal pain in sleep patterns, in pain threshold and pain tolerance, quality of life and climacteric symptoms in postmenopausal women. For this, a cross-sectional study with 96 women divided into 4 groups will be performed: Group 1 - control, no diagnosis of insomnia and musculoskeletal pain; Group 2 - diagnosis of insomnia and reported chronic musculoskeletal pain; Group 3 - diagnosis of insomnia and no complaints of pain; Group 4 - no diagnosis of insomnia and reported chronic musculoskeletal pain. All volunteers will be assessed for pain, sleep pattern, quality of life, climateric symptoms, anxiety, depression and physical activity. It is expected that this project will contribute to the study of consequences related to the interaction between insomnia and musculoskeletal pain in postmenopausal women. Thus, we intend to add scientific evidence to future intervention through new resources and treatment techniques, aiming to improve the condition of women's lives after the end of the reproductive period.
