Abstract

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response (Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome - SIRS) disorganized and exacerbated due to infectious processes that eventually evolve to septic shock. Its most common cause is gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria that trigger an inflammatory process with release of tissue stress factors. Mitochondria plays a fundamental role in the prognosis of patients with sepsis. Previous studies have shown that the production of adenosine tri-phosphate is decisive for the resolution of the sepsis. Furthermore, mitochondrial biogenesis increases on sepsis, mainly indicated by markers such as TFAM, PGC-1± and NRF-1. As in sepsis, the mitochondria might have a fundamental role in tolerance to lipopolysaccharide. Its morphological and functional changes may elucidate the cellular mechanism to adapt to the lethal dose of LPS. There is no previous studies of the role of mitochondria on the tolerance of the lipopolysaccharide. (AU)
