Abstract

Sporisorium scitamineum is part of the highly diverse clade of Ustilaginaceae fungi that includes several smut disease agents. Despite being phylogenetically close, these smut fungi infect different Poaceae hosts and they differ in the mode of plant colonization and symptom development. Comparative genomics will provide insights into the core set of genes that are responsible for their host specificity and will improve our understanding into the evolution of virulence factors regarding these important pathogenic systems. The speciation process and specialization to a single host culture is accompanied by loss of genetic diversity. Low genetic diversity was found among S. scitamineum isolates collected around the world and the population structure obtained suggests that a single lineage was dispersed from Asia to other continents. Using a multigenic approach, we will analyze different strains collected in countries where occur recent introduction of the disease (Brazil, Argentina and Australia) to estimate the extent of clonality of this species.
