Abstract

The need for a comprehensive database and catalog of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) usingthe combined simultaneous observations from the twin white-light coronagraphs on board theSTEREO mission is of extreme importance in the context of space weather forecasting. Wepropose to build a couple of cross-linked databases of the CMEs (and their properties)observed by the twin STEREO/COR2 instruments, which are available since 2006 up to thepresent. To create the catalog, we will make use of an already successfully tested supervisedimage segmentation technique to overcome the intrinsic caveats that either fully automated orfully manual methodologies exhibit, in particular when dealing with a bi-segmentationproblem where the features of interest show up with different intensities, morphologies, andtexture embedded in an ever-changing noisy background. Namely, the detection and trackingof the CMEs will be performed with the texture-based supervised segmentation techniquedeveloped by Goussies et al. (2010). The determination of the properties of interest will becarried out with the help of the new capabilities of the algorithm implemented by Braga et al.(2013). For this project, we will further refine the technique using several selected eventsobserved by both STEREO/COR2 instruments to improve its efficacy. As a final step, wewill apply the customized technique to the whole STEREO/COR2 datasets to build acomprehensive list of the relevant morphological, kinematical, and dynamical properties ofthe CMEs.
