Abstract

The production of amorphous metals created a group of materials with high desirable properties, the glass metals, with high mechanical resistence, high hardness and high wear and corrosion resistence. However, such materials have a complex fabrication because of the high crystalization tendence of metals. Also, a great amount of the amorphous alloys studied are based in a refractory or noble metal, or even rare earths, rising the price of the amorphous product. This project intends to obtain massive amorphous products (some centimeters) from the Ni-Nb-Sn alloys system. This system is based on Ni, a abundant metal and also have a high glass forming tendence because of the addition of Nb and Sn. The samples will be arc-melted and cooled in a copper mold for further analysis of the amorphous phase obtained.
