Abstract

This postdoctoral project follows the general objectives of the thematic project Contemporary Architecture and Automation, supervised by Gabriela Celani from FEC-Unicamp: "implementing, in specific cases, the concepts of parameterization and automation of the design process, file-to-factory customization and mass production of the building or components". This proposal is linked to the recently approved project Complex Adaptive Systems and Rule-Based Design: applications in architecture and urban design, supervised by the same investigator and addressed to scientific collaboration with University of Melbourne. The present investigation project is addressed to complement and deep understanding of applicant's research in doctoral and postdoctoral level, developed at the Civil Engineering Program, COPPE - Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The main topics include integration of four investigation branches, usually related to distinct computational platforms: (i) computational tools in geometric modelling based on set of rules (CAD), (ii) Artificial Intelligence, (iii) structural analysis applied to steel structures (CAE) and (iv) scientific visualization. This project expects to integrate three new investigation branches: (i) feasibility of geometries designed by Artificial Intelligence through computational tools for numerical control (CAM), (ii) modal identification of buckling modes by the General Beam Theory, addressed to components and (iii) development of new methods for structural optimization based on Complex Adaptive Systems. It aims to promote an interdisciplinary debate between Architecture, Civil Engineering and Computer Science, focused on the application of recent developments in computational mechanics to Brazilian Steel Architecture.
