Abstract

This doctoral research aims to study the configuration of the Portuguese missionary policy in the period between the acclamation of D. João IV and the agreements of Peace (Treaty of Utrecht) that put an end to the Spanish Succession War in 1715. This aim will be achieved by two main research efforts, both of them complementary to obtain a wide understanding of the subject. The first focuses on the antecedents and consequences that followed the initiative of the Portuguese crown to create new organizations in order to acquire greater control and management of the missionary enterprise. The establishment of a Junta de Missões do Reino (1655) and of an overseas Junta de Missões in 1681 is part of a long movement towards the processes of specialization of the deliberations and of institutionalization of new political and administrative bodies that marked the years after the Restoration. On the other hand, the Juntas de Missões are also related to policies and strategies built by the Portuguese monarchy to defend its spiritual rights in overseas territories at a time of strong disputes in the European scene. In this sense, we are highly motivated to investigate the relationship of the Portuguese monarchy with the Holy See and the mobilization of the Crown against the action of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. Finally, this work aims to comprehend the role of the missionary dimension in the recomposition of the Kingdom of Portugal after the Restoration, specially regarding to its repositioning in the international panorama and its strategies for the defense of its overseas territories. In a certain way, this research consists in a development and deepening of the work that I built during my Master´s degree studies. (AU)
