Abstract

This Research Project refers to an experimental thermal evaluation of heat sinks with straight plate fins inserted in a rectangular duct and cooled by forced airflow. It is proposed an investigation of two heat sinks with the same geometric dimensions, one of them with continuous rectangular straight fins and the other with aligned rectangular strip fins. The two heat sinks will be tested in an existing bench at the Research Lab of the Energy Department of FEM-UNICAMP, with distinct airflow rates through the heat sinks mounted in a rectangular duct. The convective heat transfer rates from the heat sinks will be evaluated and the results will be used in two distinct models: the traditional convective thermal resistance model and the relatively recent model considering the heat sink as a heat exchanger. The airflow head loss in both heat sinks will also be obtained in the laboratory as a function of the airflow rate and the results will be compared.For the development of this work, the student will also have to study, under the supervision of his adviser, the topics associated to the instrumentation to be used in the laboratory, the reduction of the experimental measurements and the uncertainty analysis of the experimental results.
