Abstract

The performance of dairy calves is associated with practices related to colostrum feeding management, being important the evaluation of the effect of colostrum intake on the thermogenic and metabolic characteristics in situations of stress by cold. In experiment 1, animals will be divided into 3 groups according to treatments: feeding of 2L, 3L or 4L of colostrum. After colostrum feeding, animals will be kept in a room with temperature of 22 ° C for 1 hour, and rectal temperature and blood samples will be taken. After this period animals will be placed in a room at 10 ° C, where they will remain for 120 minutes, and blood samples will again be taken at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes, and physiological parameters will be monitored. In experiment 2, the performance will be evaluated during the milk-feeding period of the animals belonging to the experiment 1. During the trial, blood samples will be collected weekly. In experiment 3, 30 calves, which will be housed in individual cages in closed sheds with controlled temperature (26 or 14 ° C ) will be used. The animals will receive 6 L of milk replacer at two meals, starter feed and water free-choice, and performance will be monitored. Weekly blood samples will be collected. On all trials blood samples will be used to determine blood metabolites, hematocrit and white blood cell count. The design of the experiments will be completely randomized block design. (AU)
