Effects of different feeding managements on the microbiome, metabolsim, health and performance of dairy calves

Abstract

The project will be composed of three experiments with the evaluation of different alimentary management and its effects on the ruminal and / or intestinal microbioma, performance and metabolism of dairy calves. In each experiment, 15 calves will be used per treatment in a randomized complete block design. In all experiments the animals will be housed and fed individually, allowing individual daily control of the liquid and solid diets intaker. The animals will be weaned at 56 days, but will be evaluated until 70 days of age. The animals will be evaluated daily using the University of Wisconsin health score system. Blood samples will be collected weekly for the determination of biochemical and metabolic profiles. The animals will be weighed weekly and body measurements will be taken. In the experiment 1 the animals will be fed with high quality colostrum (> 21% brix), being provided: 1) fresh maternal colostrum; 2) frozen maternal colostrum; And 3) colostrum substitute (lyophilized). In experiment 2 the animals will be fed with 6 L / d of different liquid diets: 1) Whole milk, kept under refrigeration; 2) Whole milk acidified with lactic acid to pH 4.2, maintained at room temperature; and 3) Milk replacer. In experiment 3, different solid diets will be evaluated: 1) 16% of NDF in concentrate containing soybean (control); 2) 25% of NDF in concentrate with partial replacement of corn per soy bean; 3) 16% NDF as treatment 1, with grass hay ad libtum; In all experiments fecal samples will be collected on days 0 (birth), 7, 14, 28, 56 (cancellation) and 70 for evaluation of the microbiome. In experiment 3, samples of ruminal content were collected at weeks 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 of life for determination of fermentation profile, as well as of microbiome. (AU)
