Abstract

This present study will examine the connection between text and music and explore extended vocal techniques used in the work Cries of London (1974-1976), by Luciano Berio, which belongs to the catalog of his choral pieces, and about which there is little available literature. First, it will consist in a bibliographic research, since Berio's texts about his compositional processes are not very extensive. The books Introduction to Post-Tonal Theory, by J. Straus and Analytic Approaches to Twentieth-Century Music, by Joel Lester will be used as basis for music analysis. Once Berio had deep connection with linguistic theories, studies of Saussure will give support to studying this field.
