Abstract

Background: cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the most frequent complications in the first year after adult heart transplantation. CMV infection is related to chronic rejection, cardiac allograft vasculopathy and high mortality. CMV infection occurs as a latent virus reactivation or as a primary infection in patients with negative serology to CMV receiving an organ from a CMV positive donor. Acute cellular rejection and acute antibody mediated rejection are risk factors to CMV infection. In the last years, the number of heart transplants has increased in our institution and we have changed the induction therapy protocol by using basiliximab in very few patients. In this new context, we do not have any data about the incidence of CMV infection and its correlation with immunosuppressive therapy. Objectives: analyze the incidence of CMV infection in the first year after heart transplant and its correlation with immunosuppressive therapy and previous rejection episodes. Methods: all patients submitted to heart transplant between jan/2013 and jul/2014 will be included in the study. A retrospective analysis of electronic medical records will be done to obtain information about renal function, electrolytes, vasoactive drugs and immunosuppressive therapy. A prospective analysis of electronic medical records will also be done to identify CMV infection all over the first year after heart transplant. The presence of CMV infection will be analyzed according to immunosuppressive therapy and to previous cellular or antibody mediated rejection. (AU)
