Abstract

The use of orbital implants and prostheses aims aesthetic and functional repair of the anophthalmic socket. There are two forms of implants: non-integrated (nIOI), smooth surface, made of silicone or polymethylmethacrylate; and integrated (IOI), newer, made of porous materials that allows integration of the to the patient tissue, with lower risk of migration and extrusion of the implants. The IOI are widely available in developed countries, but not in Brazil, because its high cost. Many studies show its failure (conjunctival dehiscence, implant exposure or extrusion and need for their removal), complications are observed in 10-22% of the patients. So there is still uncertainty about the roles of these two types of implants in the correction of anophthalmic sockets. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of integrated and non-integrated implants in the correction of anophthalmic socket. The protocol of this systematic review is already registered in the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Group of the jornal The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews with impact fator 5,9. The research project will be conducted in the Department of Anesthesiology and Evidence-Based Medicine Unit, Botucatu Medical School/UNESP, Botucatu-SP. A systematic literature review will be made, according to the methodology of the Cochrane Collaboration, mapping all identified trials in major databases.
