Abstract

This project embraces the analysis of St. Francis of Assisi in the early thirteenth century from his early representations when alive to those made Giotto in the upper Basílica of Assisi by the end of this very century. This process is considered one of most important in Art History. The design of byzantine painting in Italy had been limited by the revival of the ancient art, promoted by Frederico II. Then, through the images of St. Francis of Assisi it can be perceived the exact moment Cimabue and Giotto's paintings stated sculptures attributes provoking what would later be known as the Italian Renaissance. In this context, the ancient world memory also changes the form of presentation of Francis which was from a suffering ascetic man to history's man. (AU)
