The Riot that Never Happened: Ademar de Barros and the Articulations Against the Civil-Military Coup (1964-66)

Abstract

On 1 April 1964, there was the Civil-Military coup that overthrew the President of Republic João Goulart. The first cassations started with this new political system, but it was known that the civilian would have their power back soon. The General Castelo Branco's mandate was extended and along with this, there were cassations of many iconic characters that supported this coup, like Juscelino Kubitschek. Then, other leaderships started to realize that a military group was spreading its power and conquer more room on the political scene with its own project.At some point, the governor of São Paulo Ademar de Barros saw that he would be the next to has his mandate revoked. Because of economic crisis, the military system became strongly unpopular and Ademar chose to join some dissatisfied minorities, including a few militaries, in special General Amaury Kruel; FIESP and rural associations; Assis Chateaubriand; segments linked to PCB as well, and planned a coup led by himself. The idea was turned down due to the fact that he lost his mandate and had his political rights suspended for ten years. Discuss the political contribution to the riot that never happened is the purpose of this paper.
