Abstract

Individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) present different biomechanical responses to interventions and treatment strategies for disease, such as foot orthoses, knee braces and footwear, have been proposed to minimize the external knee adduction moment (EKAM). The foot plays an important role to keep the dynamic stability and to move the body forward in human walking. The foot has complex characteristics due to the multi-plane contact that is not identified using the single-segment foot model. For this reason, multi-segment foot models have been proposed to determine detailed motions in the foot. It is need to understand the role of the ankle joint complex between subjects with and without KOA and identify why some subjects respond differently to foot treatments. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between foot kinematics and foot posture on external knee adduction moment in individuals with medial KOA. For gait analysis, a Qualysis Proreflex system (Qualisys Medical, 2003, 100Hz) will be used to obtain the kinematic data and force plates will be used to measure the kinematics and kinetics during trials. Using an inverse dynamic approach Visual 3D (C-Motion, Rockville, MD) it will be calculated the EKAM during the stance phase for all of the individual trials. The foot posture measurements include the foot posture index (FPI), navicular height and navicular drop. The difference between groups (with and without medial KOA) will be performed using independent t-tests test to analyze the relationship between foot kinematics and foot posture on external knee adduction moment in individuals with medial KOA using a significance set at P<0.05.
