Abstract

Perceptual Organization (PO) was the focus of Gestalt psychology but was not studied enough throughout visual neuroscience history. Today we can better understand PO by using more precise stimuli, electrophysiological and image methods that were not available for the Gestalt pioneers. The main challenges in PO research today are to understand it's underlying mechanisms and how different grouping and figure-ground organization processes interact (clarifying which factors are specific and which are common to these processes). Here we will perform a set of complementary experiments to help clarifying these issues and improve clinical evaluation. We will use new tests and stimuli developed by a reference group in this area, evaluating how different PO tasks employ the ventral and dorsal visual pathways and how different event related potentials and oscillatory rhythms underlie performance in these tasks. We will use EEG, behavioral tests and non-invasive brain stimulation. In the end of the project we will have contributed to the area with: better understanding of PO underlying mechanisms, improvement of behavioral and electrophysiological testing methods for PO, better understanding of the similarities between grouping and figure-ground organization tasks and better understanding of the PO status in dyslexia and traumatic brain injury.
