Abstract

The aim of this Research Internship Abroad (BEPE) is to advance the project, which is currently being developed in Brazil, by examining one of the most crucial aspects of Foreign Policy magazine: the discussion about the challenges in the 1970s and the viable solutions to cope with them. The foundation of Foreign Policy and its debate are intrinsically related to what is considered a break up in the foreign policy consensus that had existed in America since the Second World War. After this dismantlement, a group of liberals assembled together in this new publication and have presented new ideas for the future of domestic and international policies, based on a reconsideration of American history and its special standing. This proposal interrogates their questioning of American exceptionalism, their portrait of the crisis and challenges in the 1970s and their attempt to rebuild a domestic agreement and an American leadership role in the international system by reinventing some facets of the myth of American uniqueness. The period abroad would be dedicated to reading articles concerning this topic, developing an in-depth analysis of them and accessing documents and texts that are related to this publication. (AU)
