Abstract

Since 1897, the official presence of private initiatives by foreign companies, especially North American companies, changed the scenario of petroleum research in Brazil. Both foreign companies and workers, as well as federal organs, contributed to the study of the local geology, and to the evaluation of several potential petroliferous basins in the Brazilian territory. However, there were some difficulties regarding the purchase of materials, the high import costs, mainly from the United States, and the lack of Brazilian professionals in the area making it necessary to hire foreign professionals. As from 1920, federal organs such as the Serviço Geológico e Mineralógico do Brasil (1907), the Conselho Nacional do Petróleo (1938), and Petrobras (1953), gradually took the lead of petroleum research in Brazil. These organs had its own technical staff, mainly formed by North American professionals, who contributed to the creation and development of the know-how of the Brazilian oil industry. Thus, this project aims to analyze the development of the oil industry and its techniques in Brazil, and how this process was associated with the United States. This study will focus on the case of the North American geologist Walter Link (1902 - 1982), who organized the Department of Exploration of Petrobras based on the American industry model, and transformed the DEPEX/Petrobras on the largest Department of Exploration among global oil industries during the 1950s.
