Abstract

The estimation of temporal intervals is an essential skill for the adaptation of organisms to their environment. Although there are several proposals of the underlying neural mechanisms for this ability, there is still a large discussion of its electrophysiological signature. This project aims to investigate whether oscillations present in humans brain activity relate to discrimination of temporal intervals. An experiment based on the peak procedure will be used to study temporal discrimination in humans while electroencephalography (EEG) is concurrently recorded. In each trial, a target that moves at a constant speed from left to right and takes 1.5 seconds to reach screen center will be presented. In Normal presentations, a button press will produce a shot at the center of the screen. The participant's goal is to hit the shot on the target. In Test trials, the target will be masked and automatic shots will be given at different intervals. The participant's task is to judge whether the shots hit the target. Based on the responses of the participants, we will be able to estimate the intervals in which participants perceive the shot as hitting the target. Moreover, the EEG recordings will allow us to check for electrophysiological signatures characterizing the estimated time perceived by the participant.
