Abstract

The dynamics of gas-solid fluidized beds are complex, predominantly determined by the combined effects of formation, movement, and interaction of bubbles, as well as by solids behavior. Therefore, it is of great importance to understand the hydrodynamics. The University of British Columbia (UBC) is currently leading a project that evolves several different Canadian and international laboratories for the determination of local profiles in gas-fluidized beds, comparing invasive and non-invasive measurement techniques. A novel modular system, the traveling fluidized bed (TFB) column and auxiliary components, were designed and constructed to facilitate transportation and deployment. At the current time of the research, two main works have been published, one concerning concentration measurements (Dubrawski et al., 2013) and the other particle velocity measurements (Tebianian et al., 2015). The data provide the first part of a unique comprehensive database for comparison with predictions of CFD and other advanced hydrodynamic fluidized bed models. In parallel to the traveling column study, researchers of the FBC have focused on studying electrostatics in fluidized beds (e.g. He et al., 2014.a). The authors suggest further tests of particles with different properties to evaluate the applicability of the probe for in situ monitoring of the charge density of particles and to provide information on local bubble behavior in gas-solids fluidized beds. The main objective of this proposal is to combine both projects, by inserting an electrostatic probe into the traveling column. This alternative measurement technique can enrich the existing database. It can also help to verify whether or not the electrostatic probe is capable of giving useful and further information consistent with the known hydrodynamics of the TFC, thereby contributing to the electrostatic probe project, offering additional data to validate the technique.
