Abstract The Clube de Engenharia do Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1880 as an entity able to bring together engineers, architects and entrepreneurs in order to stimulate the material expansion of the Brazilian society and, either, to legitimize the technical knowledge as compelling for the driving of public life. Gathering professionals from various fields of engineering, architecture and industry, many of them foreigners linked to the ongoing modernization verified in Brazil and other Latin American countries in that period, the Clube de Engenharia became the main advisory body of Brazil, and the first, among its peers, in the South America. Its action can be seen, then, as a "lever for progress". In this research we intend to study the relationship between Brazil and United States through the Archives of the institution. In a specific way, handling the files related to the associated people from 1880 until 1933, year in which, in Brazil, the profession of Engineers and Architects was regulated by the Federal Decree 23.569. The intention that supports this proposal is to show that the Clube de Engenharia was an institution with greater importance than the nationalist character, enshrined in the petty historiography to treat it. Thus, through the understanding of the theoretical and methodological assumptions of transnational history, we would like to comprehend the institution as an arena that hosted professional graduated in the United States. Due to this fact, the tensions, conflicts and negotiations involving Brazil and United States can be analyzed, contributing to clean up the mist that still encompass this topic and this institution after more than 130 years of its foundation. The proposal involves participation in seminars, attendance of lectures, courses and research in Archives under the supervision of Professor Barbara Weinstein, from New York University. Then, this proposal aims to point out the relevance of these topics for Urban History, History of Architecture and Urbanism, History of Immigration and History of Technology that are under my point of interest in my professional activity at the Federal University of São Paulo, in its Department of History.
