Abstract

The inadequate management of agricultural areas increases pressure on natural resources, elucidating the negative impacts of these activities on the environment. The removal of the original vegetation increases erosion, and the resulting sediments are transported by the rain and deposited in adjacent areas to those of cultivation. The interception of the sediments, before they reach the water bodies, is essential since they carry nutrients and pollutants that cause eutrophication, increased water turbidity and siltation of reservoirs. The riparian forest provides an ecological corridor, protection against erosion and a filter against pollutants and sediments, being recognizes by law as Permanent Preservation Areas (APP) of prohibited suppression and mandatory of protection and recovery. However, due to the disarticulation of agricultural and environmental policies is common to find areas where the APPs were removed or degraded. The obligation of recovery and the extent of APPs, based on water body size, elucidated the lack of accurate scientific data on the influence of the size of the riparian forest in maintaining their ecological functions, particularly with respect to the retention of sediments.Knowing the importance of riparian forests to maintain the quality of water resources and biodiversity, the present work is part of the Thematic Project n° 2013/50718-5 and aims to stimulate the discussions about the ideal width of riparian forests in sediment retention from agricultural systems.
