Abstract

Recently, some studies have shown that IPC can improve physical exercise performance, which is probably mediated by improvement in metabolism during exercise. However, there are no studies that investigated the effect of IPC in the post-exercise recovery. One of the variables that can be assessed during post-exercise recovery is the activity of the autonomic nervous system to the heart, which has been used to follow the recovery and program the training of athletes. In this context, our hypothesis is that the IPC applied to the lower limbs can induce faster and greater recovery of cardiac autonomic activity after an exercise test in runners specialized in middle (i.e., races´ length between 400 and 800 meters) and long distance (i.e., races´ length greater or equal 1,500 meters). This will be assessed by the heart rate recovery analysis (HRR) after a cardiopulmonary exercise test, which is a valid and reproducible method to evaluate the autonomic nervous system.
