Abstract

The objective of this study will be to evaluate the effects of either previous nutritional restriction or previous intake of concentrate feedstuffs on days to adapt to high-concentrate diets, feedlot performance, feeding behavior, rumen health and carcass traits of Nellore cattle. The treatments will be disposed as follows: Maintenance (forage ad libitum + mineral supplement); Restriction (forage restricted at 1,4% of body weight + mineral supplement), and Concentrate (forage ad libitum + 0,5% of body weight of a mix of concentrate feedstuffs and mineral supplement). It will be used 120 Nellore yearling bulls, with approximately 380 kg of body weight. Cattle will be blocked by weight, and randomly distributed in 24 pens, which will be considered the experimental unit. This study will last 110 days, divided into 2 phases: 28 days of pre-adaptation, in which the treatments previously described will be applied, and 84 days of feeding high-energy diets. In the beginning of the trial and every 28 days all animals will be weighed. Dry matter intake will be measured every day, and then calculating the average daily gain and gain to feed ratio. Similarly, the animals will undergo ultrasound assessments at the beginning and end of the feedlot period to evaluate the deposition of muscle and fat in the carcass and slaughtered at a commercial packing. Will also be assessed in this project as response variables: 1) days to adapt to high-concentrate diets; 2) feeding behavior and ration of selectivity; 3) dry matter intake fluctuation and net energy observed; 4) rumenites, morphology, histology and immunohistochemistry of rumen epithelium; 5) incidence of liver abscesses; 6) carcass traits.
