Abstract

Robotics is experiencing an increasing evolution in recent years and robots have already been used in several important areas of society, including critical contexts and the automation of daily activities. There is a great demand for robots able to operate with higher autonomy and decision making capacity, which makes the robotic systems responsible for controlling such robots bigger, more complex, and difficult to develop. In this scenario, most of robotic systems are still developed isolatedly, making them difficult to design and integrate into the context of Systems-of-Systems (SoS), a new class of complex, large-scale software systems in which operationally and managerially independent systems cooperate to provide new and unique features that can not be provided by any constituent separately. In this perspective, the main objective of this postdoctoral research project is to support construction of robotic systems as SoS or as systems that can be integrated as constituents of SoS. For this, we intend to establish a process and a reference architecture for supporting construction of software architectures for such robotic systems. By conducting this project we aim at contributing to the integration of robotic systems into the context of SoS and, consequently, facilitate their use in the many areas in which systems can be applied. We expect, therefore, to extend the adoption of robotic systems to applications that are useful and essential for the society, such as ambient assisted for elder people and national security control systems.
