Abstract

The genus Bartonella spp. comprises gram-negative and facultative intracellular bacteria which parasitize mainly mammalian erythrocytes and endothelial cells, including those from human beings. Diseases caused by this group of parasites can manifest as self-limiting presentation or as potentially fatal outcomes. These bacteria are the etiological agents of Cat Scratch Disease (CSD), Bacillary Angiomatosis, Trench Fever and other systemic abnormalities in humans, showing their zoonotic potential, especially in immunocompromised individuals. Bartonella species have been showing high prevalence among mammal communities, and bats are the second main reservoir. In front of that, this study aims to determine which species or genotypes of Bartonella spp. circulates in bats population sampled in the states of Pará and Paraná, using molecular techniques. For this purpose, bats spleen and liver DNA samples will be submitted to real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) for Bartonella spp. based on nuoG gene. Positive samples will be molecularly characterized by conventional PCR assays for Bartonella spp. based on ITS region and rpoB, ribC, gltA, fstZ, pap-31 and groESL genes, followed by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis.
