Abstract

The effects of heavy metals on the human health are quite known as the disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, skin and respiratory diseases, severe neurological problems including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, loss of intellectual capacity, many types of cancer. The sediments of rivers, lakes and seas are considered sinks of heavy metals due to the transport and destination that the water is able to do in the biogeochemical cycle with those contaminants. Therefore, contaminated sediments are required to have an appropriate treatment, minimizing the risks of contamination in humans and biota. The environmental remediation of contaminated sediments with heavy metals, especially Hg, Pb, Cd, includes the immobilization from adsorption or less reactive phases formation. In this context, this project proposes the study about the adsorption properties of lead ions by mica muscovite, testing the utilization of mica muscovite as a reactive material applied to the in-situ capping technology for remediation of sediment contaminated by lead.
