Abstract

This research aims to identify historical, political and epistemological foundations for psychoanalysis and psychiatry. Considering the common historical and epistemologic foundations in those areas it is considered advantageous to highlight and develop those common backgrounds in order to better understand the setbacks, dilemmas and challenges regarding the "psi" field as a whole. One of the advantages taken into consideration is the clarification of the foundational fragilities in the field, which are not addressed if "psi" specialties work one against the other - which seems to be the present case, and in which scenario the traditional practice is to highlight the specialties strong points and hide its weak ones. The research considers thereby to contribute to proper address of issues such as the role of medical treatment, psychosocial treatment, psychoanalytical treatment and their roles in contemporary clinic.
