Abstract

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an auto immune disease that affects 1 in every 1.700 woman in Brazil. It has a complex etiology involving environmental, genetic and hormonal factors. The loss of immunologic auto-tolerance with activation and proliferation of auto-reactive T cells, production of inflammatory mediators and of auto-antibodies seem to have s crucial participation in the beginning and development of tissue damage in addition to the presentation of auto antigens characteristic of the disease. Patients with SLE, have increased numbers of peripheral neutrophils with higher expression of CD11b which is related to clinical activity. Experimental models, like the pristane induced one, that develop syndromes similar to human lupus contribute to the comprehension of human SLE. The administration of pristane in Balb/c mice induces inflammatory responses with auto-antibody production, reproducing serological, histopathological and clinical factors of the disease. In this study, we aim to evaluate the presence of activated neutrophils CD11b+Ly6G+CD62L- in peripheral blood and in peritoneal wash and the production of plasmatic IL-8 in this model, in order to evaluate some aspects of the inflammatory process in lupus.
