Abstract

Osteomyelitis is one of the most important postoperative complications. It usually happens due to open fractures or to open fractures reductions. Its treatment can be difficult and involves empirical choice of an antimicrobial until the results of antimicrobial susceptibility test are finished and indicate the most effective antimicrobial for the case. Therefore, and adding to patient discomfort and cost of the treatment after the process installation, the prophylactic measures acquire great importance. The choice of antimicrobial to be used should be based not only on efficacy against the pathogens, but also in the posology, because not always the animals cooperate, as well as owners may not follow the prescribed recommendations. This project retrospectively evaluates the effectiveness of a broad spectrum and long-term antibiotic (cefovecin) in reducing the rate of complications related to infections after orthopedic surgeries performed at the Comparative Orthopedics and Traumatology Laboratory (FMVZ-USP). It will also be made a questionnaire that will assess the level of owner satisfaction with the post-surgical treatment using cefovecin. The period covered by the study runs from August 2013 until December 2015.
