Abstract

Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) is one of the most common orthopedic injuries in the dog and the major cause of knee degenerative joint disease (DJD). Its main clinical manifestation is claudication. Among the causes of this rupture, we have systemic inflammatory joint diseases, traumas, degenerative diseases or their association. CCLR brings sequelae to the knee joint, including impairment of static stability, kinematic alteration and motor function, triggering joint overload and microleads to joint cartilage. The most appropriate treatment for this condition is the surgical treatment, and the osteotomy for tibial plateau leveling (TPLO) is the most commonly used. The success rate is 85-90%, however, postoperative complications of TPLO are observed in 14.8% to 37% of cases and include wound infection, osteomyelitis, implant failure and seroma. The use of chondroprotectors aims to delay the progression of DJD and thereby improve postoperative clinical outcome. The aim of the present study is to evaluate if there are inflammatory effects resulting from the intra-articular injection of chondroitin sulfate in the femorotibiopatellar joint of dogs submitted to the TPLO procedure, based on the degree of claudication, presence of pain, quantification of edema and presence of infection.
