Evaluation through baropodometry system of tibial plateau leveling osteotomy on treatment of cranial cruciate ligament rupture with three diferent plate models

Abstract

Cranial cruciate rupture é the number one limping cause in dogs, caused by trauma or degenerative, and the later being associated to aging, conformation abnormalities and imune-mediated arthropaties. It is more frequent in large breed dogs, and its high incidence makes this one of the most studied diseases in veterinary orthopedics now a days. In spite of the large variety of surgical techniques available, the ideal treatment for this orthopedic condition remains undetermined. In the last decades, techniques were developed to avoid abnormal movement of the knee by giving dynamic stability through the changing of bone geometry, and, among them, the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) is one of the most used now a days. There is a variety of plate models, from different makers, that are used in this technique and stable fixation of the osteotomy is a critical point in avoiding late consolidation and implant failure. Early weight bearing of the limbs one of the main advantages of the TPLO and it may be evaluated in a subjective manner (table with limping degrees), but the kinetic analysis of the movement in a pressure plate allows for an objective measurement of the use of the limb during walking. The main objective of the study is to compare three different plate configurations in the fixation of osteotomy for leveling the tibial plateau in the stabilization of knees in dogs with cranial cruciate rupture, through a subjective and objective evaluation of the data obtained on the pressure plate.
