Abstract

Worldwide eucalyptus planted forests are seen as major consumers of water and therefore antagonistic to the conservation of water resources. In Brazil, the forest legislation provides that farms should reserve a portion of its area for environmental protection. These protected areas should be covered by native vegetation. So despite constitute a monoculture planted forests are intermixed by fragments of native vegetation. For this reason it is necessary to understand whether different proportions of native forest and planted forests can contribute to conserving water resources, and how these proportions can minimize the effects of activities related to forest management, for example, timber harvesting and road density. To ensure a better analysis and understanding of the data collected in Brazil, this project describes the importance and justifies the choice of Forests and Water Research Group in the School of Forest and Ecosystem Sciences of the University of Melbourne to perform the BEPE internship, under supervision of Associate Professor Patrick Lane. Academic and personal gains are expected through the internship. (AU)
