Abstract

Successive changes in land-use over the years have potential to affect aquaticorganisms and communities functioning. Thus, the aim of this project is assess if, andhow, the land-use - grassland to sugarcane - and time (one decade) can affect functionaldiversity of tropical stream fish. For this, we resampled 43 streams that had beensampled in 2003 at Northwest state of São Paulo. All streams were resampled followingthe same methodology: two electrofishing passes with power generator (220 V, 50-60Hz, 3.4-4.1 A, 1000 W) in 75 m reach in each stream. The dominant land-use changedin 14 streams (grasslands à sugarcane) and the land-use remained unchanged in 29control streams. The 2003 samples will be compared with 2013 as for: (i) functionaldiversity (similarity dendrograms and MPD "mean pairwise distance" and MNTD"mean nearest taxon distance") and (ii) beta functional diversity, both based on trophicand ecomorphological traits. To evaluate the effect of land-use change and time on thecommunity functional diversity and structure, a RDA partial will be performed at Rprogram. Thus, the results will be useful the development of conservation, managementand restoration actions for river and stream ecosystems, especially in highly disturbedareas by agriculture.
