Analysis of core endurance in throwing athletes with and without scapular dyskinesis

Abstract

The dynamic involved in the throwing motion requires a sequential strength development through the components of the kinetic chain. The muscles of the core are one of this components and its stability allows an optimal production, transference and control of the required force to the throwing motion. The scapula is responsible to transfer the force originated on the other components of the kinetic chain to the arm and the ball. Thus, this structure should present normal patterns of movement and be dynamically stabilized. There is a lack of studies in the literature that have evaluated if the scapular diskinesia is associated with core instability in throwing athletes. Therefore, the objective of this study will be to analyze core endurance in throwing athletes with and without scapular dyskinesia. Thirty-eight healthy throwing athletes (19 with and 19 without scapular dyskinesia) will participate of this study. Scapular dyskinesia will be evaluated by having the subject elevating the arm five times in the sagittal plane, with and without weight, and five times in the frontal plane. Dyskinesia will be classified as "yes" or "no". For core endurance, the time in flexion, extension and lateral flexion (right and left) positions will be measured in seconds. Data analysis will be done according to its normality, with significance level of 5%. (AU)
