Abstract

Concerned about continuities and ruptures of the struggles for freedom and citizenship played by workers between the last decades of the nineteenth century and early twentieth, this postdoctoral research project chooses as conductive line the trajectory of Vicente de Souza, a "mulatto" teacher, physician, abolitionist, republican and socialist in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Written to integrate the Thematic Project "Between slavery and the burden of freedom: workers and forms of labor exploitation in historical perspective", of the Cecult-Unicamp, the study passes basically by the analysis of different kinds of texts published in newspapers, images, government documents, and other records of political, cultural and mutual aid associations, in the Empire and the First Republic.
