Abstract

The candidate has been working with third-harmonic generation (THG) at interfaces, studying the contributions of self-focusing and cross-phase modulation effects on the third-order process using femtosecond laser pulses. In the present project, the student will join an international leading group in ultrafast laser pulse, nonlinear microscopy and nonlinear optics. It will be an excellent opportunity for the student to take contact with new lasers and new experiments in the frontier of the ultrafast laser field. More specifically, we intend to work with THG microscopy making use of the SPatIal Frequency modulation for Imaging (SPIFI) approach. THG microscopy has been an important imaging tool for biological samples and SPIFI is an alternate single-element detector imaging technique that allows improving the image rate, reducing the time required to form the full image. Here, we will develop THG SPIFI using a programmable 2D spatial light modulator (SLM) instead of the printed mask that is normally used. It will have the added benefit we can do adaptive aberration correction. Then, we believe that this internship will be very fruitful for the Thesis about THG and to improve the scientific skill of the student.
