Abstract

Objectives: The main objective of this study is evaluate de contribution of Knowledge, religiosity, fear, social orientation, quality of life, reference groups and sociodemografic variables on the practice of blood donation. As a specific objective, we intend to propose a Portuguese version of the ''Blood or Injection Fear Scale" and the Blood Donation Knowledge Questionnaire (BDK) and assess the psychometric properties (validity and reliability) of these scales when applied in representative sample of users of public health services in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. Methods: In a first stage of the study, the translation and back translation of the scales by bilingual translators will be performed, followed by assessment of content validity by a panel of judges with proven competence and face validity. The translated instruments will be applied to a sample of users of a health service in Ribeirão Preto. Construct validity (factorial, convergent and discriminant) will be assessed. Confirmatory factor analysis will be performed. Reliability will be evaluated by Cronbach's alpha coefficient. In a second stage will be performed a new data collection, in approximately 1,054 adult subjects, residents of Ribeirão Preto, users of primary health care services, to evaluate contribution of Knowledge, Religiosity, Fear, Social orientation , Quality of Life, Reference Groups and sociodemographic variables (independent variables) on the practice of blood donation (dependent variable). For this, a stratified random sampling will be used, considering the population of each health unit (UBS, UBDS or NSF) a stratum. The 41 health units will be grouped into 12 strata according to the district where they are located and the Paulista Social Vulnerability Index (IPVS) prevalent in their area. The health units where will be conducted the data collection were selected by lot. Data from this collection will be included in a structural equation model, considering the practice of blood donation as the central construct. The psychometric properties of all scales will be evaluated before their insertion in the structural model and the fit of the model to the data will be analyzed by the goodness of fit indices. The contribution of independent variables to the central construct will be evaluated based on the statistical significance of paths, assessed by z test and their confidence intervals, considering a significance level of 5%.
