Abstract

Associative memories (AMs) are mathematical models inspired by the human brain ability to store and recall information by association. Such as the brain, AMs are also able to recall a certain stored pattern even when the input represents an incomplete or noisy version of a stored item. The class of recurrent correlation associative memories (RCAMs), introduced by Chiueh and Goodman in the early 1990s, can be used to implement high-storage capacity AMs with excellent noise tolerance. Notwithstanding, RCAMs are designed for the storage and recall of bipolar patterns. In this research project, we shall investigate a fuzzy version of the class of RCAMs, namely the class of recurrent exponential fuzzy associative memories (REFAMs). A REFAM defines recursively a sequence of fuzzy sets obtained by averaging the stored items weighted by an exponential of a fuzzy comparison measure. Computational experiments concerning the retrieval of corrupted gray-scale images will be performed in order to evaluate the storage capacity and noise tolerance of REFAMs. Also, the performance of REFAMs shall be investigated by considering applications such as classification, prediction, pattern recognition, and control.
