Abstract

This research project intends to study the cinematographic figures which perform narrative suspensions in favour of a sensorial appeal in contemporary fiction film, reconnecting cinema to its spectacular origins and offering a different spectatorial posture from the one implied in classical narrative films. We will study these moments of transition between the narrative and the sensorial in a body of audio-visual objects constructed around the trance motif (moments when characters are presented in distinct perceptive/performative conditions), and we furthermore propose to analyse and build an inventory of well defined and recurrent trance figures. Through these procedures, we will be able to understand how the narrative structure can be pierced by the sensorial and how it can, despite the sensorial pressure, resist. Methodologically, we will privilege the notion of character effect and we will seek to apprehend the means by which this expanded notion of character (that emphasizes its plasticity beyond its mere function in a story) can bring a new light to the tension between the narrative and the sensorial and perform an innovative integration of both dimensions.
