Abstract

In recent years, Brazil's number of men and women sentenced to community work has increased steadily. What is the meaning of this? Would this be a new understanding of how the state ought to punish? In order to answer this question, present work portrays an ethnographical study of the day-to-day routine of a public agency responsible of controling and monitoring women sentenced to community work. Thus, we hope to understand the meanings of punishing, whilst free, to work-sentences, specially when the sentenced are women.
