Abstract

This project aims to study the transformations undergone by the city Gades - current Cadiz - with the arrival of the Romans in the second century BC. Originally founded by Phoenicians from Tyre, the city has always occupied a strategic position in traffic between the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic ocean. In addition to it, the city is located intentionally close to the mouth of the Guadalquivir river, also facilitating the contact with part of the interior of the Iberian peninsula - the region known as Turdetania by the sources. Thus, the town found by the Romans had molded features from its contact with the Mediterranean and the interior of the continent. Our goal is to see whether and how the material and textual sources from centuries that followed the Roman arrival indicate changes and continuities in this city about the contact with the interior of Turdetania and the Mediterranean Sea. We will try to do this analysis under concepts such as networks and connectivity, very important to the human sciences nowadays. (AU)
